The camp with Stellan will run from Monday, July 28, through Friday, August1. Each day will consist of a three hour morning session and a three hour afternoon session. The cost is $500. Please read the following letter from Sean O'Neill

Dear PTTC members and others,

After speaking and working with Stellan Bengtsson for our Beijing Paralympic training camp in San Diego last month I convinced him to try to make it up to Oregon to work in the near future.

At the same time Ben in Salem had been asking me when I might be able to do another clinic at his club. To me it seemed like such a natural to see if I could get Stellan up here to since I will be so busy with the disabled team and my NBC commitments.

Stellan is by far the best coach I have ever worked with and I have worked with a number of the best Swedish and Chinese coaches of the last 30 years. His normal private lesson rate is $80 and his English is perfect.

I want to stress that if you are a serious player or coach you are missing an opportunity of a lifetime if you don't take advantage of this unique opportunity.

If I had to compare Stellan to another coach or player in another sport it would probably be John Wooden or Larry Bird. The only difference is he knows table tennis like few do and players like Persson, Waldner, Maze, Karlsson, Lindh all have Stellan's influence in their game.

I understand that taking 5 days off might be tough for people that work 9-5 but if there are any juniors that want to be taught be a world champion now is your chance. I would guess the 5 days of intense training would be the equivalent of probably 8-10 months of weekly lessons. I would bring a notebook and write everything down or better yet a video camera.

If you are a coach, you must be there, it is simply that important. If Tiger Woods said he would sit down with you and share everything he knew would you miss it? Also Stellan is currently sponsored by JUIC/Paddle Palace so there is another reason to participate.

Mitch Seidenfeld, one of the USATT Developmental Coaches of the Year, said after working with Stellan in San Diego, it was probably the best 4 days of learning in his 25+ years in the sport. I have yet to hear anything but positive comments from anyone that has worked with him.

Here is one by a average 2000 level player in LA:

I participated in a table tennis Clinic by Stellan and Angie Bengtsson last weekend over at Robofit Table Tennis center.

I have now had a few days to internalize what I learned and look over my notes.

I really, really liked the way Stellan coaches and runs the clinic. I think I will try to make an effort to come over to San Diego occasionally and take lessons from him. He has a very cerebral way of analyzing both technique and tactics that appeals to me. Between Stellan and Angie, I think there was a lot of personal attention for every student. Naturally, it does not hurt that Stellan can demonstrate everything he teaches.

Bengtsson

I have seen a lot of coaches over the years. Some were very good and some were not very good. Stellan is the only one who seems to have recognized that most of the people coming to the clinic can not take lessons from him
on a regular and frequent basis. He seems to structure his explanations and his drills in such a way that we can go off and work on things on our own.

What I found absolutely puzzling was the fact that there were twelve spots for the clinic (it was open to anyone over 1700) and only eight people were there. I am not sure whether there was a problem with getting the word out, but I think four Southern California players missed out on a great opportunity to improve their games.

It is hard for me to say of course, but I thought that both Stellan and Angie really enjoy teaching. Heck, Angie was there just a few days after a knee surgery. Now, that is dedication! I'd probably be popping vicadins in bed.

I have told Stellan that we have an amazing group of players that are very keen on improving in Portland. I have also said we have a great junior base that is ripe for coaching. I have instructed the cadets that I coach
on the east coast to fly out to his California camps this summer.

I hope I have made my point. I would be embarrassed if Stellan came up here on my request and we left some spots open because of lack of communication or knowledge of what he has to offer. Thanks,

Sean O'Neill
